Carrianne Booker agreed for her husband, Cord, to go to California to seek their fortune. His letters suddenly become rare and hint of peril. Afraid for him, she decides to go search for the man she loves.

Cord's ex-employer, Shiv Deegan—the devil of the Barbary Coast—wants him dead because he knows too much about Deegan's thievery and murders. A U.S. Marshal and San Francisco's governor are backing Cord's efforts to prove the devil's guilt.
