In 1818, when Gavin McAllistair was only eleven years old, his father took him from his home among his mother's people, the Shoshone of the Shining Mountains, and left him with an uncle and aunt to learn how to be a white man. Gavin bitterly resented the move at first, but gradually learned to live in the white man's village. He appreciated his kind aunt and uncle and tried to please them, learning to read, write and work the fields.

Yet he never stopped yearning for the home of his youth in those Shining Mountains.
